If you’ve successfully been in a leadership position for some time, there’s a good chance that you’ve hit upon some of the secrets of this space. Although everyone does it differently, there are certain nuggets of wisdom I’ve learnt along the way that may hold true for most of us:

If you have passion and determination, anything is possible.
A clear goal that inspires you to get out of bed every morning is one of the essential ingredients of great leadership. Of course that requires some initial clarification of exactly what that goal is. Sometimes what we really want is different from what we think we should want. As the saying goes though, “There’s no point in climbing to the top of the ladder only to find it’s leaning against the wrong wall.” Passion and crystal clarity on where we’re headed also goes a long way towards inspiring our team to pitch in and help us get there.

On-going personal growth is not just desirable, it’s fundamental
Understanding and working with our own strengths helps us to navigate the potentially treacherous roads of leadership in the most effective way for us. After all, part of our purpose is to shine our unique light out in the world in our particular way, not someone else’s. Likewise, knowing what we struggle with enables us to put together a strategy that minimises our weaknesses or even turns them into strengths.

Everyone needs a sounding board
Although the most important feedback we need is usually within us, it can sometimes be really difficult to get to it from the inside – we’re just too close. It can help to work with someone who knows the right questions to help us uncover our inner wisdom, and who can then champion us as we move towards making any necessary internal or external shifts. This is an extremely powerful and effective approach to changing our life.   These are just some of the most important things I’ve learned during my years of experience in the field of leadership.
